Our experiment shows that the DataDirect® MySQL driver is ~37% faster than the native MySQL driver when used with MemSQL and Tableau. But don’t take our word for it, take a look at the data.​

How Commercial MySQL ODBC Drivers Perform

DataDirect drivers are designed to be the fastest and most reliable connectivity solutions in the industry. For today, let’s take a look at MemSQL (a fast in-memory database) and the DataDirect MySQL driver (a fast ODBC driver). MemSQL is compatible with the MySQL protocol, and therefore works the commercial DataDirect MySQL ODBC driver that supports InnoDB, MiISAM and Memory storage engines.

So, the question you might have is what makes the DataDirect MySQL driver unique, when compared to the native MySQL driver typically used with MySQL and MemSQL? To check this, we conducted an experiment with Tableau data visualization software and a MemSQL database as our data source. We then used a DataDirect MySQL driver and a Native MySQL driver as connectivity solutions, and compared the performance between the two drivers.​

The performance of each driver was calculated using Tableau’s performance recording tool. As a part of this experiment we used both drivers to fetch and also to generate an extract for 300k, 600k and 1 million records from the MemSQL datasource to Tableau.​

The Results

The following are the performance metrics measured by Tableau for native MySQL and DataDirect MySQL driver.​
