Oracle fanatics will cringe but one answer is "it's a lot like Oracle". Obviously there are some major differences but from 30,000 feet there is also a lot more commonality between Progress' architecture and Oracle's than there is with, say SQL Server or Access or dBase or Foxpro. The most unique things about Progress' architecture seem to be the self-service client and the use of the 4GL instead of SQL.

Gory details would take days to explain. I could be wrong but I don't know of any concise online sources of information. Attending Exchange or taking a DBA training class would cover quite a lot of the ground. You could also probably get some good information by sitting down and reading the documentation.
