OpenEdge Development Costs (that old chestnut)

There is some sort of university program that comes and goes. But even in college towns with an employer sponsoring it and looking for interns interest is ... "tepid".

Fashion is fickle.

I think the days of us hoping that Progress would become "mainstream" are long past. It is what it is.

Putting aside the sexiness... the big problem we had when we tried to sponsor a college program (or even get interns to learn on the job) is that they would search the job boards for Progress positions and see that there weren't that many jobs out there. Then they would search their other options and see many more results.

But.... Progress should still make it easier for those actually interested to get functional development copies. Free downloads with a link on the front page would be nice.

Of course, that way of judging what to study is short-sighted since there are even more Java programmers than Java jobs so that one is a commodity whereas a talented ABL programmer is in high demand.

That is also true... but trying to explain that to a 21 year old isn't always the easiest thing to do :)

Especially when they can't find any Progress job postings that are closer than 500 miles away from home.

A potential problem, to be sure ... unless, of course, one is looking for a reason to move. But, so is 100 people applying for 1 job and it being difficult to differentiate oneself.
