As the technology supporting it continues to improve, our reliance on cloud technology continues to grow. In the last ten years, we have seen a major shift from locally hosted data centers to virtual servers from IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) vendors.
Companies are cashing in on the virtualization trend and seeing a promising return on investment. By creating their own private, public and in some cases hybrid clouds, companies can ensure their data is protected and computer resources are being used efficiently, boosting productivity. Of course, there are some challenges that must be addressed when moving to a virtual model. For example, when working in a virtual environment, it is important to consider data segmentation. Data Segmentation with VDS
Luckily, VMware provides some tools to help manage traffic, like its vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS). VDS benefits virtual data centers by:

- Providing support for private LANs and policies
- Enabling networking statistics and policies that allow virtual machines to migrate between machines on a high availability (HA) cluster
- Managing data connectivity between applications and databases in a virtual or HA cluster environment with distributed virtual port groups
Data segmentation in a virtual environment is designed and implemented based on the proximity between your application and your database, hosted on virtual machines or in a HA cluster. Configuring your VLAN’s policies and port groups determines how secure your data is when accessed from different network domains. Whether you are using private or public domains, traffic and load balancing play an important role in how the data is segmented and distributed through the internal network for user consumption.
Consider also whether your critical data needs to be encrypted between the application and database. Without end-to-end encryption, hackers can access cache or temporary data in RAM. This data can then be copied and sold on the black market, ultimately leading to damaging information breaches.

The way you configure your VLAN will also depend on the data connector you are using to access it, so it’s important to get the right one for the job.
