Good to hear it has been solved. It has been years since I have done any character work, and even then never with an updateable browse. I thought your problem was due to some obscure code setting the cell or column to read only, not that the character browse works differently from GUI. A quick search has brought up these two sites, and you will see that Ctrl-G will also tab to the next cell:
