is there a generic browse program that symix 4 comes with where i can pass
it a filename and it passes back the picked selection in a
browse/choose/frame? even for a mod/non-symix database file/table?

Take a look in the browse directory...

I don't think there is a generic browse program. They use an include
browse/browse.i that does what you're trying to do. This is the browser that
is run when you press the binoculars for a key field lookup. It requires a
wrapper program to be written. Unfortunatly, it requires a lot of setup
parameters to be defined to be completly integrated into Symix.

This should get you started.
