The only way I've been able to do this is by using a 3rd party product called Transform (www.sprolinux.com). By configuring it's bounce feature, we've been able to redirect printouts to other printers.. and this provides an opportunity to setup special printer instances (on the Windows Transform server) that has the paper tray setting saved in the instance settings in Control Panel/Printers. Works fine in either Windows or Unix environment, but thats just a minor thing that Transform does.. it does lots of other stuff, so there will be a cost to get up and running.

You should be able to do this using PCL. /027&l#H where the # sign is replaced with a digit. 4 is Tray 1, 1 is Tray 2, 5 is Tray 3, 8 is Tray 4. I remember doing this on a task I had to print to a predetermined tray because each tray held a different pre-printed form and instead of making people manually feed them we just had them print to a different named printer. Not sure if the tray numbers exactly match up I just pulled them using a PCL guide I had for reference but you should be able to do this without third party software in your printer setup easily.

Also yes I know the original post was 3 years old but it was updated and it caught my eye.
