Question Large Temp Files being created

Hi All,

Quick question regarding the creation of large temp files.

Currently have a client complaining about extremely large temp files being created in their session temp directory. All these file begin "en" followed by a number and have seen some of them grow up to 60gb.

Having done some research I don't believe these are Progress files. Can anyone confirm this or has anyone come across these files before?

Thanks very much,
Niall

Nabbing this from elsewhere, but worth a try:
  • You can look at the owner to see what user created the files
  • Then use something like Sysinternals Process Explorer to view the processes that are running under that user (Right Click the columns and check "User Name" on the "Process Image" tab
  • Then look at the handles that each of these processes has (Goto View Menu, Check "Show Low Pane, Change "Lower Pane View" to "Handles"), one of them may have a handle open to the weird files you're seeing

Not part of the standard Progress temporary files (DBI, SRT, LBI, RCD, RPF, etc).

Maybe part of the application itself and not Progress? Odd that something else would start using the Progress temp directory unless they are using the Windows temp directory.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses. Have managed to track this down to smtpmail.p I think.

The issue appears to be that when sending mail with an attachment using smtpmail.p these "en" files are being created. If the mail sends successfully then these files are cleared up and there is no problem. However, if the sending of the mail with attachment is unsuccessful for whatever reason then the files are not being tidied!

Thanks
Niall
