file management: files without extension

Hi,

as part of a project, I'm building a little "file management system", where users can upload files to specified location.

In windows is it possible to hide known file extensions, but when those files are emailed, the extension is "lost".
Word-documents still can be opened, but pdf-documents for example, can't.

Is it possible on one way or another to determin the file-type if there's no extension available (to add the extension again to the filename)?

Hi,

Everyone can mail files to our company emailaddresses and personnel in our company save them to a location on 1 of our file servers... When they save such attachments without of with a hidden extension, it gets lost somewhere.
