Buttons disabled after updating any record

Hello,
I have an odd situation where buttons within a viewer become disabled once any record in the viewer is updated (by clicking on update from the smart tool bar).

The buttons simply find and display details about parts of the account on the screen. You can go through as many records as you like, and it correctly pulls info for each one. However, as soon as you update and save data to any one file, the buttons become deactivated and never become active again, until you exit all the way out and come back into progress. HELP!!
