DataDirect Cloud serves as an effective hub, but on-premise connectivity is still a popular requirement. It’s definitely part of the performance picture. Also part of the picture is polyglot persistence. When we covered data lakes earlier, we showed that not many companies use a single data store anymore.
Netflix Coins “Polyglot Persistence”
Fifteen years ago companies would choose DB2 or they’d choose SQL server as their source. They did that mostly because the data access options couldn’t be swapped out at the time. So you would be tied to a client library, and you wouldn’t have the flexibility to choose. Then one of the engineers from Netflix did a presentation on the architecture of Netflix, using the word "polyglot" as essentially a marketing term to describe applications that used more than one data source—which were increasing in popularity.
Bring Your Data Sources Together
You need a complete picture: The databases that you choose, your big data sources, data silos sitting in a cloud application—all of those different things need to be brought together so you’re not working with fragmented information.
Single Connection Point—Many Databases
Back to polyglot persistence: Here’s what we’re continuing to work on in the engineering group. We’re building drivers for Pivotal and Mongo and Cassandra and Cloudera while we still have a strong relational foundation. We’re also building in Redshift and Dynamics: Eloqua, Service Cloud, Google Analytics—which is a really interesting source for multidimensional models. Being able to have full across-the-board access with high performance is a requirement that we’re encountering and meeting at every juncture. Ultimately, it’s not just about meeting the needs of a single point-to-point connectivity; it’s about providing the connectivity between a single point to many different places.
