NewSQL combines SQL transaction performance with the scalability of NoSQL systems.
A couple years ago I was speaking at the Big Data Expo in London along with an analyst friend from the 451 Group, Matt Aslett. Around that time Matt coined the term “NewSQL” to describe those rising stars in scalable and high performance databases that use the relational data model and primarily have a SQL interface.

Essentially, NewSQL combines the best features from both worlds – maintaining the transactional integrity of traditional database systems while providing high-end scalable performance of NoSQL systems.

This combination of performance and scale is crucial in transaction-intensive environments. NoSQL-based data systems are riding a seismic wave of success with the promise of scalability. NewSQL databases seek to overtake NoSQL with the added bonus of high-speed transactional integrity.
The Need for SQL Performance

- Splice Machine provides a SQL-on-Hadoop database supporting transactions and analytics. Running transactional applications on Hadoop is a relatively young area, but gaining traction in the NewSQL space with customers like Harte Hanks.
- Translattice scales out PostgreSQL as a distributed relational database with cloud and appliance deployment options. Their idea is to scale out for big data transaction processing and analysis.
One of the leading offerings in the NewSQL space is VoltDB. VoltDB handles fast-streaming data and is an extremely scalable, SQL-compliant, in-memory relational database. Notable VoltDB customers include Novatel Networks and QualityHealth.
