NewSQL combines SQL transaction performance with the scalability of NoSQL systems.

A couple years ago I was speaking at the Big Data Expo in London along with an analyst friend from the 451 Group, Matt Aslett. Around that time Matt coined the term “NewSQL” to describe those rising stars in scalable and high performance databases that use the relational data model and primarily have a SQL interface.

NewSQL Databases Promise High Speed Delivery

Essentially, NewSQL combines the best features from both worlds – maintaining the transactional integrity of traditional database systems while providing high-end scalable performance of NoSQL systems.

NewSQL databases promise high-speed delivery

This combination of performance and scale is crucial in transaction-intensive environments. NoSQL-based data systems are riding a seismic wave of success with the promise of scalability. NewSQL databases seek to overtake NoSQL with the added bonus of high-speed transactional integrity.

The Need for SQL Performance

Let’s first take a look at NoSQL and how Progress® DataDirect® plays a key role in their success. DataStax Cassandra enjoys a reputation as the most scalable of NoSQL databases, with notable customers like Netflix and eBay who rely on linear scalability on clustered hardware. DataDirect matches that scale by normalizing all that data in real time as it is being read – essentially breaking up the data into smaller, more manageable partitions.

MongoDB is a popular NoSQL database that uses a document-store model. It is known for ease of development and flexible handling of data seen in mobile, social and Web applications. Notable MongoDB customers include Cisco, Intuit and MetLife. DataDirect support for MongoDB again matches that scale attribute with data normalization and flexibility in data access.

A drawback of NoSQL systems, however, is SQL-oriented transaction performance. NewSQL databases promise scalability plus SQL for the best of both worlds.

Notable NewSQL Examples

  • Clustrix touts its fault-tolerant scalability without giving up SQL transaction performance. Symantec is a notable Clustrix customer that demonstrates that high scale environment.
  • MemSQL is a NewSQL database used by Comcast and Shutterstock, and is distinguished from NoSQL by its combination of in-memory transactional performance and SQL compatibility.
  • Splice Machine provides a SQL-on-Hadoop database supporting transactions and analytics. Running transactional applications on Hadoop is a relatively young area, but gaining traction in the NewSQL space with customers like Harte Hanks.
  • Translattice scales out PostgreSQL as a distributed relational database with cloud and appliance deployment options. Their idea is to scale out for big data transaction processing and analysis.

One of the leading offerings in the NewSQL space is VoltDB. VoltDB handles fast-streaming data and is an extremely scalable, SQL-compliant, in-memory relational database. Notable VoltDB customers include Novatel Networks and QualityHealth.

A recent case study for VoltDB tells a Progress® DataDirect® OpenAccess™ SDK success story. Their in-memory database customers required the ability to visualize and access data through standard analytics and business intelligence solutions such as Tableau and Microstrategy.

To VoltDB, DataDirect leadership and proven success in the market was a compelling reason to collaborate with Progress®. After some competitive comparisons, the VoltDB team settled on the OpenAccess SDK from DataDirect for building and customizing the data connectivity they needed.

VoltDB was able to develop a prototype in one month, releasing the new driver in just three months. In the end, they were able to reduce their time to market by 50% versus other solutions.

DataDirect sees high impact opportunities in partnering with these rising stars in data systems. From enabling the vendors to customize their own data drivers using OpenAccess, to providing well-architected high performance data drivers that can easily be subsumed and deployed in customer environments across industries, DataDirect is ready to address your new data challenges.
