In a recent Newsweek article, “Computer Programming Is a Dying Art,” technology journalist Kevin Maney wrote the heretical phrase, “…technology is about to render programming languages about as useful as Latin…”

Maney goes on to criticize the too-little, too-late efforts by schools to get on the programming bandwagon. He argues that most students will never need to learn programming skills because computers are becoming more brain-like–allowing people to interact with them in human terms instead of the other way around.

While Maney’s article is simplistic, it accurately catches the trend–a trend reflected in the rise of low-code and Agile development, as well as the popularity of the “citizen developer” buzzword, which describes the more or less no-code development tools that can make business subject matter experts (and others) into capable development partners.

High productivity and high control cover the bases

Most organizations will need a combination of development approaches that include both low-code (high-productivity) and Agile (high-control). Organizations will increasingly look to employ platforms that provide both options and will make applications using both technologies.

Low-code doesn’t begin to address all the challenges we face but it does address the needs for speed, responsiveness and productivity.

At Progress® we think the diversity of applications and the mix of developer skill sets should drive the app dev and deployment approach. That’s why we offer Progress® Rollbase, which provides a low-code, high-productivity approach that gives you the ability to design, build, deploy and manage all your mobile and web applications in one place. For high-control requirements, we offer Progress® OpenEdge and Modulus. So, no matter your need, style or approach, we’ve got you covered.
