With the recent launch of the OpenEdge 11.2 release, we expanded the reach of the platform to include support for mobility solutions. What looked on paper like a “point release” was actually a significant re-architecture of the platform to support the development and deployment of enterprise grade mobile business apps. Apart from significant enhancements on the “back end” e.g. REST adapter, Spring templating for security at the Web Tier and enhanced tooling for service-enabling business logic available at the Application Server Tier, we also took the authoring experience for mobile apps to a whole new level with the OpenEdge Mobile App Builder.
The Mobile App Builder is a browser-based Visual Designer allowing easy drag-and-drop development of mobile UIs. The Mobile App Builder is a cloud-based service, supports collaboration across multiple stakeholders and is seamlessly integrated with the robust, tried and tested OpenEdge platform. Mobile apps can be HTML5 web apps or can be “hybrid” apps running on a specific targeted mobile architecture (iOS or Android), which can be distributed via an app store. With this base capability now in place, Progress OpenEdge Application Partners (aka ISVs) and Direct End Users can build out their existing solutions to encompass mobility.
Last week we were flattered to see Salesforce.com announce the addition of mobile capabilities to their platform, with Version 2.0 of their mobile SDK slated to ship in June 2013 (!). It doesn’t look like their SDK supports the notion of a Visual Mobile UI tool with a canvas and a rich set of jQuery Mobile controls like the OpenEdge Mobile App Builder, so Salesforce Developers are forced to code JavaScript to build mobile apps and handle events in the mobile client.
Without a visual UI builder, there’s no intuitive way to map data from UI elements to a structured (JSON) payload from transmission over the wire to server-side business logic. These are huge productivity benefits for developers who are looking for a platform providing a state-of-the-art visual Mobile App Builder coupled with strong end-to-end security model, a highly scalable back end and an integrated database “in-the-box.” That’s OpenEdge Mobile!
