We currently use below version of MFG/Pro with below version of Progress database and Operating System.

Application: MFG/PRO Release eB2.1 SP5 as of Oct 6 2006

Current Database: PROGRESS Version 9.1E04 as of Sat Apr 15 02:34:28 EDT 2006

Current Operating System: HP-UX 11i v1 OR HP-UX B.11.11

We are planning to upgrade our Operating System to HP-UX 11i v2 Update 2. Would our version of MFG/Pro and Progress database be compatible with it?

I don't see what this question has to do with Database Administration but I'll offer my two cents.

  • MFG/Pro is a vendor application (QAD). So any "will this application work with..." question should be directed to them, should it not?
  • Progress 9.1E04 is ancient. It shipped 16 years ago, reached mature phase 14 years ago, and was retired 5 years ago. Its capabilities and limitations around security, not to mention fault tolerance, availability, and vendor support (very limited, no more fixes ever) should not satisfy any auditor or stakeholder. It is not certified on any new operating system or even any older ones that it would be acceptable to use today, much less for the foreseeable future.
  • I don't know much about HP-UX but some searching leads me to believe that HP-UX 11i v2 Update 2 is also pretty old (Sept 2004?).
  • You're crowd-sourcing info that should come from the parties that (I assume) you're paying for support.
    • If you're not paying HPE, Progress, or QAD for support then that would be another issue.
Bottom line:
  • Can you get your intended configuration to function? Maybe.
  • Is it supported? Unknown (to me).
  • Is it vendor-certified? I doubt it.
  • Is it very old and creaky software from a previous decade? Definitely.
  • Does it sound like a plan for success? Not to me.

To be more blunt than Rob - your Progress and HPUX releases are ancient, obsolete and unsupported. Your data is at risk. It is criminally irresponsible to be running a business on that crap. If nothing else the use of the word "current" in your description is a felony in many jurisdictions.

Furthermore - it is probably costing more in electricity to keep that HPUX server running than it would cost to migrate to a new Linux box. Which would also probably run the application 10x to 20x faster.

"creaky software", "felony in some jurisdictions"...
Whoever said people that write code aren't good at creative writing was obviously wrong.
