The most optimistic claim I head came from Jose Daniel Ponz of Spain. After reading your document on estimates of Linux users, I think there is a piece of information missing: if you do a very simple exercice by searching documents in Altavista (google) using different keywords, you will get the following numbers:

Keyword Number of documents (1998) (2003)
========================================================
Linux 1,284,800 53,700,000
DOS 948,860 35,400,000
Solaris 247,140 5,760,000
Windows 2000 --- 5,640,000
Windows 98 --- 4,190,000
Windows XP --- 4,080,000
Windows NT 246,985 4,010,000
Windows 95 331,332 3,950,000
Progress Software --- 2,710,000
Windows 3.1 --- 2,160,000
IBM AIX --- 620,000
