Reliable Web Hosting Suggestions?

Well I can certainly say that I am not pleased with my current hosting provider (arvixie).... the last couple of days have been brutal with a variety of performance and outage issues.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a decent hosting provider that actually works?

Thanks

I have never once been satisfied by a "hosting provider" whose main business is selling domains.

Especially the ones that provide a whole bunch of so-called "tools" to manage your "site".

I think you're a whole lot better off with an Amazon micro-instance (running Linux and Apache of course) and an elastic IP address. Costs almost nothing and you have complete control.

I suppose it depends what you are intending to do with the site.

A single static page would be reason enough for me ;)

I like control. I dislike "tools" that get in my way.

I use Amazon for various Windows and Linux servers I have in the cloud.

Couldn't be happier and it only costs me a few bucks a month.

Easy to use, very organized, comes with tons of tools and add-on services like backups. Great stuff!

Have not had any downtime yet, touch wood.

I use Godaddy for my docxfactory.com WordPress website.

It came with everything setup and installed which was great for getting started since I was new to WordPress.

I believe, it costs me about 70-80 bucks a year.

They do have surprise downtimes every month or so.

Onetime they restored the website to the previous day. Maybe it was lost. At least I know they backup :)

If I go to the root directory, I can see the directories of other websites although I can't access them. There's no VM for every website.

So it's probably good for small websites or getting started.

Once again, Im late to the thread...but for static web page hosting...and some limited dynamic-html pages... your I-net provider typically allows ## megs of space with each account. Using an ftp client html files can be posted there and using redirect from your domain provider your IP address should access the "index.html" in your account directory. (Especially those providers running unix servers - which most are).
Its the most simple, economical hosting solution thats available. And youve already paid for it with your internet provider account. Why buy another if the need is for simple solutions? Of course it depends upon the need.

Giving away the knowledge we all have but overlook... "KISS" is still the best pracice.

Using your ISP for hosting, in my experience, a train-wreck waiting to happen.

It is cheap for a reason. There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. Amazon is amazingly inexpensive.

IMHO you are *much* better off splitting responsibilities and being in a position to change ISPs or hosting providers as circumstances dictate. Some of the circumstances that might dictate are things like the ISP or the hosting provider or both turning out to be an unreliable bunch of dirtbags that cannot do anything right. Not that I have anyone particular in mind ;)

You should also make sure that your DNS is provided by someone other than the ISP or the hosting provider. Being held hostage to someone's "customer retention" squad is not a lot of fun.

Tell me about it :)

I have the site back up again at http://practicaldba.com/ using Amazon.

Still wrestling with getting the old domain back under my control from the previous host. I think they are swamped by the sheer number of people having issues with their sites being down.
